Supporting the Marine Industry to be efficient, profitable and reach its environmental goals by 2050

Since the first sailing ships were built in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago, the marine industry has played a vital role in connecting the business world through imports and exports of exotic spices, building materials, natural resources, precious metals and textiles. Even after 21st century advances in aviation and land transport systems, the marine industry remains the backbone of global trade to this day, with over 90% of the world’s trade transported via sea vessels. From a military perspective, the strength and reliability of Naval fleets have long been the making of powerful empires, first initiated by the Persian Empire in the fifth century BC.

As wooden ships have made way for steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre builds and sails have been largely replaced by mechanical engines, there are two key challenges that the marine industry faces today. The first is to address the ongoing impact of corrosion on ship structures and parts, which has been estimated by the worldwide authority on corrosion NACE International, to cost the marine industry between $50-80 billion each year. The second challenge is to ensure that ship propulsion systems are operating at the highest standards of environmental care, as highlighted by the International Maritime Organization’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced from international shipping by at least 50% from the 2008 figures, and eventually reduce emissions to zero.

Solidus Industries provide a range of next generation cleaning solutions to support the Marine Industry to reduce costs on corrosion, operate at maximum efficiency and minimise the ecological impact of any operation; whether it be in the Naval, Commercial or Private sectors.

Through rigorous testing by the DST (Defence Science and Technology Group), our Zi-400 HD cleaning product has been scientifically proven to not only prevent corrosion from occurring, it also has the unique ability of arresting existing corrosion and stopping it from spreading. Superyachts

Since the emergence of state-of-the-art mega refineries in Asia, coupled with the traditionally prolific production coming out of the USA, Russia, Europe and the Middle East, the oil refining sector has become an extremely competitive global market. For Australia’s remaining oil refineries to stay competitive and continue to supply the domestic market, it is essential that they operate at maximum efficiency, safety and reliability while keeping costs down.

Solidus Industries provide a range of highly specialised cleaning products to ensure that oil refineries maintain peak production levels, while minimising fuel consumption and easily avoidable maintenance costs.

Shipbuilding

The ship and boat manufacturing industry in Australia has an international reputation for high quality service, workmanship and innovation. Between ship construction and maintenance, the industry adds over $1.7 Billion to the Australian economy each year and is responsible for employing over 14,600 skilled workers.

Solidus Industries are proud to supply revolutionary cleaning products suited to a range of applications across the shipbuilding process.

Scientifically proven to prevent corrosion in steel, aluminium and a range of alloys, our Zi-400 HD Industrial cleaner is the ultimate multi-purpose cleaner for shipyards as it perfectly complements best practices for corrosion prevention used in the shipbuilding process.

Corrosion Case Study

A combined cycle power station operated by Sithe Sterling Energy in upstate New York was responsible for providing electricity to a nearby Oneida manufacturing plant.

With an integrated fitout of a GE Frame 6B gas turbine compressor engine, Zurn HRSG and extraction steam turbine, Sithe estimated that to successfully meet their supply demands they would need to maintain an availability rate of 95.6% and reliability factor of 97.0% of their gas turbine compressor engines.

Thanks to a regular cleaning program using ZOK, their actual results were significantly higher.

Actual Availability Rate Actual Reliability Factor
98.5% 99% Year 1
96.5% 98% Year 2
99.3% 99.9% Year 3

The Power of Preventative Maintenance

Sithe attributed this success to a consistent routine of washing their gas turbine compressor engine to ensure peak performance. An on-line water wash was performed each day the engine was in operation, with ZOK 27 detergent used on alternate days. For on-line hot washes, ZOK would be used for the first 3 minutes of the water wash, followed by a 17 minute rinse. In addition to daily hot washes, Sithe performed a quarterly off-line cold wash with ZOK.

The balance of consistent on-line and off-line washes is the key to success. Sithe experienced this first hand during a period when they ran their gas turbine compressor engine for 201 consecutive days without an off-line wash. Their calculations showed that the gas turbine output had fallen by 5.6% and the heat rate by 2.4%. Following an off-line wash with ZOK 27, the engine’s performance was restored to its original levels.

Thanks to Sithe’s consistent routine of on-line and off-line washing with ZOK 27, readings between quarterly off-line cleans showed only a minimal reduction of output performance (0.4%) and minimal heat rate increases (0.3%).
